The meaning of ‘Kalam’ is Pen and ‘Kari’ is art; so ‘Kalamkari’ exactly means ‘Pen craft’. Before 2000 years Kalamkari was the art of few rural women. Such ancient art is passed down to the recent generations.
Kalamkari is block printed and hand painting cotton textile product. The cotton cloth pieces are washed and dried repetitively. Then the fabric is block printed with Vegetable dyes. The Kalam (pen) is used to draw finer details. In recent times the digital files of Kalam Craft has been introduced.
